Does Tesla need Apple to reach its lofty sales goals?

Should Apple (AAPL) buy Tesla (TSLA)? That’s the thought behind this article on Business Insider today. On the surface it may seem like a writer with a sexy headline and too much time on his hands, but peel away the outer layers and the idea has some merit.

Tim Cook’s strengths lie, at least partially, in the manufacturing and supply chain portion of his company. Those strengths fill Elon Musk’s weaknesses at Tesla.

Can Tesla succeed alone or do they need someone like Apple to help them to their goal of selling 500,000 cars a year by 2020

Certainly Tesla doesn’t need Apple to survive but as Yahoo Finance’s senior columnist Michael Santoli points out, “I think they [Tesla] have a path to be a standalone but there are tremendous challenges. These manufacturing issues and supply issues are just a taste of what it’s gonna face on the way to half a million units.”

As for Apple, “They need something to do with the $150 billion in cash,” Santoli points out, “and there’s Tesla sitting there with a $30 billion market cap.”

Still, it’s a far fetch idea. Yahoo Finance’s Jeff Macke compares it to trading Adrian Peterson for Tom Brady. As Santoli says, “I do think it tells you something about the psychology of investors who say 'look at these two great “gee whiz” companies, let’s just put them together.'” It’s just the latest in a string of suggestions for Apple, a company that seems to be doing just fine without a big earth-shattering acquisition.

That isn’t to say discussions like this are devoid of usable, or at least interesting, information. Santoli says it tells you two things. First that investors think Apple has “too much potential energy” locked up in all the cash they’re hoarding and second that investors believe Tesla needs some outside help to hit the mark they have set for themselves.
