US banking group Citi has entered a multi-year alliance with Google Cloud to modernise its technology infrastructure through cloud migration and artificial intelligence (AI).

This collaboration will see Citi moving various workloads and applications to Google Cloud's secure and scalable infrastructure, a move aimed at improving employee and client experiences.

The upgrade will enable Citi to offer better digital products, streamline employee workflows, and leverage high-performance computing (HPC) and analytics platforms, stated Google Cloud.

This covers the utilisation of advanced HPC capabilities to support the daily execution of millions of computations in Citi's Markets business.

Additionally, Citi plans to implement Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform to advance generative AI capabilities company-wide.

This technology will support developer toolkits, document processing, and digitisation capabilities, which are crucial for enhancing customer servicing teams.

Citi technology and business enablement head Tim Ryan said: “Citi is on a mission to modernise our infrastructure and increase our safety and soundness so that our businesses can continue to serve our clients with speed and agility.

“Leveraging Google Cloud opens up a whole new frontier for us in how we can run applications with faster and more comprehensive outputs, and provide our colleagues with the tools they need to deliver for our clients.”

Google Cloud ensures the protection of sensitive data and compliance with regulatory, policy, and business requirements.

It adheres to key industry standards, holding comprehensive compliance certifications like Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), ISO 27001, and Service Organization Control Type 2 (SOC 2).

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said: “Our strategic partnership with Citi to continue to modernise its technology infrastructure and drive enterprise-wide innovation underscores Google Cloud's commitment to helping the financial services industry transform with cloud and AI technology.

“By combining Citi's deep banking and customer experience expertise with Google Cloud's leading cloud and AI capabilities, we can deliver significant benefits to Citi's clients and employees.”

In August 2024, Tech Mahindra tapped Google Cloud to enhance generative AI adoption and support digital transformation for various entities of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M).
