Cut costs without clipping a single coupon with Krazy Coupon Lady’s hacks
For moms wearing many hats, the ability to multitask is a must. Back by popular demand, mogul-moms of Krazy Coupon Lady, Joanie Demer and Heather Wheeler joined us to share some time- and money-saving hacks that help them juggle it all.
Set up automatic reorders
For household staples, automatic reordering saves you 5% to 15% on items you use most. Retailers like Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), Amazon (AMZN) and Sam’s Club all offer some kind of subscription option for you to set the item and the frequency of how often you want the deliveries. Out of all four, Demer has found the biggest savings at Amazon because you automatically save 15% when you subscribe to five or more items at a time. “I’ve been paying about the same or even less than what I would at the supermarket,” says Demer.
Shop for groceries online
Food shopping doesn’t get any faster or easier than this. With a few clicks, you can browse aisles, sales, and coupons on popular online grocers like FreshDirect, Peapod, Amazon Fresh, Target, and Walmart. To get you to try out their services, most of them have ongoing promotion codes that offer deals like $25 to $50 off your first order, or free delivery.
Unfortunately, after the initial discounts, you’ll be paying a premium for the convenience. To get around that, Wheeler suggests checking Walmart’s site to see if you’re able to pick up your groceries for free at their designated drive-through lanes where Walmart employees load your car with the items you ordered online. To compete in the online grocery market, Walmart has been testing out these services since 2014 and rolling them out at new locations. “It’s in about 30 markets and they chose smaller and medium-sized markets, so in Boise, Idaho, we have it and it’s great because we don’t have a lot of delivery options,” says Wheeler.
Use rebate apps
If you want to save but don’t have the time to clip coupons, try using rebate apps like Ibotta and Checkout 51. These are just two of Demer’s favorites because the only thing you need is your phone to do all the work.
Ibotta partners with brands to get you cash back; you can unlock rebates for deals, scan barcodes to save and get cash-back on your purchases. For example, right now on the app you’ll see $1 cash back on brands like Hefty for trash bags, and $2 off Seventh Generation laundry detergent. Checkout51 is similar: You snap a few photos of your receipt and upload it to the app for cash back.
Bonus cleaning hacks
Over the years, some of the most popular blogs on their couponing site have been about their wacky cleaning hacks that really work. One favorite of Wheeler’s is to get rid of nicks and scratches on leather furniture by wiping it with a banana peel. Another fruity-fresh trick is to slice a grapefruit in half, dip it in coarse salt, and use it to clean your bathtub for an all-natural scrub.
