Harley Davidson sputtering, Comcast loses more subs, Herbalife thwarts Ackman
It's that time again - trending tickers, the stocks that you're tracking as measured by Yahoo Finance ticker searches:
Harley Davidson (HOG): Peter Fonda's favorite motorcycle maker experiencing some not-so Easy Riding today as the shares drop 5%. The Wisconsin motorcycle concern beat earnings but slashed guidance saying it's now expecting its shipments to grow between 3.5% and 5.5% this year, down from an earlier forecast of 7% to 9%. Harley blamed 'startup issues' in production but it's worth noting that rival Polaris (PII) reported a 107% increase in sales in its motorcycle division. Polaris shares are up 10%.
Comcast (CMCSA): The company that people actually hate more than used car dealers and divorce attorneys is trading higher after reporting higher quarterly revenues. Profit increased 14.8 percent, to $1.99 billion, while total revenue rose 3.5 percent, to $16.8 billion from the period a year earlier. Comcast added 203,000 broadband customers, more than the 159,000 that four analysts estimated on average according to Bloomberg. The bad news? Philly-based Comcast shed another 144,000 cable subscribers. Imagine how many customers would have quit had they been able to get through to Comcast's customer support.
Herbalife (HLF): The company actually trading higher today as activist Bill Ackman delivers 'the most important presentation of his career,' attempting the seal the deal on his short case for the stock. Ackman, who famously went public on his massive short bet of HLF stock, reiterated his pyramid scheme thesis for the company which he claims preys on minorities and the poor. Ackman says he's spent $50 million of his own money making the case against Herbalife which at least thus far hasn't been charged with anything. Shares have been all over the map today and are currently about 5% to the plus side for the day but down 10% so far in 2014.
