Microsoft (MSFT, Financials)-backed OpenAI has appointed Caitlin "CK" Kalinowski, former head of Meta Platforms' (META, Financials) Orion augmented reality glasses division, to lead its robotics and consumer hardware division.

Kalinowski said in a LinkedIn post, "In my new role, I will initially focus on OpenAI's robotics work and partnerships to help bring AI into the physical world and unlock its benefits for humanity."

Following its recent joint development of an AI-powered device with former Apple (AAPL, Financials), OpenAI's push into hardware is highlighted by this recruiting action. September saw CNBC reveal that Apple's iMac and iPhone designer, Ive, had teamed with OpenAI to investigate consumer hardware prospects.

The news also fits recent findings that the $157 billion startup is thinking about switching from its present nonprofit form to a for-profit model.

Separately, a $400 million fundraising round for San Francisco-based robotics business Physical Intelligencenow valued at $2.4 billionwas participated in by OpenAI. Additional investors in this round were Thrive Capital, Bond Capital, Amazon (AMZN, Financials) founder Jeff Bezos, and Lux Capital.

From Meta, where she oversaw augmented reality initiatives including the Orion mixed reality glasses prototype, Kalinowski adds significant expertise. Orion is the "first true holographic augmented reality glasses" according to Meta CEO. Kalinowski helped Apple design MacBook models prior to her arrival at Meta.
