What comedian Nick Kroll learned about value from his mother

Comedian Nick Kroll, who created and stars in the Netflix animated hit “Big Mouth,” doesn’t like to throw his money around. However, he can justify a business class plane ticket from Los Angeles to New York, but not bottled water at the latest hot restaurant.

“I hate being upsold water at restaurants,” Kroll said on an episode of Yahoo Finance’s My Three Cents which airs Wednesdays at 5pm.

The plane ticket has real value to Kroll — he can arrive to his destination rested and ready for work. The water upsell at a restaurant is just annoying.

Kroll credits his mother Lynn for instilling this flintiness in him as a child.

“When we were kids, we would go on lovely vacations, and my mom would buy us nice clothing,” Kroll recalled. “But if we called information — this is in a pre-Google or pre-everything — you had to look in the phone book. She was like, ‘You are not spending a dollar fifty to call information. You're gonna look in the phone book to find it.’”

A comfortable seat on a plane has real value to Kroll, but the hotel minibar is another no-no. He will pass on $7 for Pringles and $5 for M&Ms., but he’ll “spend $40 on a steak without blinking an eye.”

For him, it’s all about perceived value.
