President Donald Trump ties former President Barack Obama as most admired man in the U.S.
President Donald Trump has tied the former President Barack Obama for the most admired man in the U.S., according to Gallup’s annual poll.
This is Trump’s first year in the top spot, while it’s the 12th year in a row for Obama. Results were based on random telephone interviews of 1,025 U.S. adults conducted December 2-15 and had a sampling error of ±4 percentage points with a 95% confidence level.
The poll found that the picks are based on political preferences. 41% of Democrats chose Obama while 45% of Republicans picked Trump. Independents were fairly split.
According to Gallup, “Obama’s 18% mentions among U.S. adults as the most admired man are in line with his 2018 (19%) and 2017 (17%) figures, all of which are high for a former president. Dwight Eisenhower is the only other former president who received double-digit mentions at any point after leaving office.”
Trump’s 18% was an increase from the previous two years, when he was named the most admired man by 13% of respondents in 2018 and 14% of respondents in 2017. Much of the increase came from Republicans — the 45% number is a 13% increase from 2018 and a 10% increase from 2017.
Rounding out the top 10 men were Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft (MSFT) Founder Bill Gates, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A, BRK-B) CEO Warren Buffett, Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and former President Jimmy Carter.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama took home the honors as the most admired women in the poll, followed by current First Lady Melania Trump. Also in the top 10 were legendary talk show host Oprah Winfrey, climate activist Greta Thunberg, Queen Elizabeth II, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
