Starbucks to Lyft US employees to the polls in Election Day get out the vote effort
Starbucks (SBUX) is giving all of its nearly 200,000 U.S. employees a Lyft (LYFT) to their local polling place.
On Tuesday, Starbucks said it would provide all of its employees, known internally as “partners,” a free one-way Lyft ride up to $75 to the polls to cast votes in the presidential election, or volunteer as a poll worker. The offer also covers partners just dropping off a ballot at a post office or another voting location.
The offer is valid through Nov. 3.
In late August, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson issued a call to Starbucks employees to get out and vote in what’s shaping up to be a polarizing election.
“The upcoming election is a reminder that we, as citizens, play an active role in our society by simply getting involved and voting. Who you vote for is a very personal decision that you make as a citizen,” Johnson wrote at the time.
Starbucks' push to help employees cast their ballots is part of the coffee chain’s ongoing efforts to “promote civil rights—for partners, for customers, and for the communities we serve,” he added.
As part of that effort, the company has provided its employees nonpartisan sources of information on registering to vote, finding a polling place, or requesting a mail-in ballot.
The coffee company has also been working with Civic Alliance to encourage its employees to volunteer with their local election authority as nonpartisan poll workers.
On its popular mobile app, Starbucks featured the National Voter Registration and provided information for customers to register to vote, and find polling locations within their communities.
