'Stranger Things' is breaking Netflix records in first days of season 3

If you spent your Fourth of July binging the new season of ‘Stranger Things,’ you’re not alone.

On Monday, Netflix (NFLX) tweeted that more than 40.7 million household accounts have been watching the third season of the hit show since its debut, breaking a four-day streaming record for the platform. The streaming giant also told its followers that 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.

‘We're either going to season 4 or season 5’

High ratings for ‘Stranger Things’ are nothing new. According to a 2017 report from Variety, the second season of the series averaged 8.8 million viewers per episode — with 361,000 viewers watching all nine episodes within the first 24 hours of its release.

Netflix has yet to confirm if a season four of the sci-fi series is on the horizon, but actor David Harbour, who plays police Chief Jim Hopper on the show, told CNET Magazine last year that the series would continue for at least four seasons.

“We're either going to season 4 or season 5,” he said. “It's still being debated.”

With the strong viewership numbers ‘Stranger Things’ is posting, it seems likely that Netflix will agree to renew the show for another season.

Other Netflix originals are also streaming hits

‘Stranger Things’ is not the only Netflix originals that’s seen impressive ratings.

Last month, the company’s new Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler comedy film ‘Murder Mystery’ brought in over 30 million views in the first three days it was available to users. And in December, the platform’s original thriller ‘Bird Box’ reached 26 million viewers within its first seven days of streaming.
