Taco Bell brings back the Quesalupa, giving diners a break from chicken wars
With fast food giants exchanging salvos in the chicken sandwich wars, Taco Bell (YUM) is going back to basics by bring back an old menu favorite, the Quesalupa.
Beginning Thursday, the cheesy snack will be available for a limited time in U.S. stores, for the first time in nearly five years.
"During its debut, the Quesalupa wowed cheese lovers everywhere and was one of the brand’s biggest limited-time offers in history" the company said on Wednesday. "Now it’s back, and more craveable than ever, with 50 percent more cheese inside its famous double-layered shell."
The item is a crispy chalupa, flatbread shell, stuffed with a blend of melted pepper jack and mozzarella cheeses. Inside are Taco Bell’s signature flavors that include seasoned beef, lettuce and diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and reduced fat sour cream.
The menu item costs $2.99 alone or $6.99 for a combo that features one Quesalupa, two Crunchy Tacos and a large fountain drink. Prices vary on location.
Similar to the launch of Taco Bell's $5 'cravings' box, rewards members the Taco Bell app can gain access to the Quesalupa a day early on March 10th.
The cheesy twist on the menu item originally debuted back in 2016, before it went back into the testing kitchen to "perfect the shell’s cheesy experience of the fan-favorite menu item." The new iteration then began being tested once again last September in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Other fast food restaurants are also stepping up their game in the quesadilla competition, Chipotle (CMG) launched a Hand-Crafted Quesadilla on Tuesday that's available only on its app and the web. While others are capitalizing on the nostalgia factor, fast food competitor McDonald's (MCD) also brought back the McRib after an eight-year hiatus in late 2020.
Shares of YUM! Brands closed at $102.68 on Tuesday, while shares are up more than 16% from a year ago.
