The country’s best and worst cities for dating: report
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a new survey from Apartment List highlights the country’s best and worst cities for romance.
More than 11,000 single renters across the country participated in the survey, highlighting 86 metros around the United States.
The best on the list? Provo, Utah. Nearly half of the respondents — 47.5% — reported that they were satisfied with the city’s dating scene.
Provo is joined by Richmond, Va., at 44.2%, and Raleigh, N.C., at 42% to round out the top 3.
“With its robust tech scene, Raleigh is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The influx of young professionals entering the area every year mixed with the 22,000 students attending local North Carolina State University is likely one of the reasons for the increase in dating satisfaction,” the survey noted.
The satisfaction in dating life drops steadily throughout the top 10 into percentage range in the 30s. Pittsburgh, Denver, Houston, and Grand Rapids, also make an appearance on the top 10 list.
On the flip side, three Florida cities comprise the country’s “worst” cities for dating, all polling at below 10% satisfaction. North Port ranked the worst on the list with under 5.5% satisfaction rate. Deltona was next worst on the list with just over 7%. Lakeland beat out Deltona, with a roughly 8.6% satisfaction rate.
“Aging populations and renters migrating to larger Florida metros like Orlando, Miami, and Tampa might be worsening the dating pool,” Apartment List stated.
Also in the bottom 10? Birmingham, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Harrisburg, Pa.
Interestingly, the survey also found that men reported higher levels of satisfaction with dating than women.
Out of all the cities, men were happiest with the dating scene in San Diego at 53% satisfaction. The women? Only 26% satisfied.
Denver and Houston also ranked high on the list for men’s happiness with dating life. Women in those cities were only 30% and 32% satisfied, respectively.
On the flip side, the city with the highest satisfaction rate for women was Columbus, Ohio — 40% of women there were happy with the dating scene. Houston and Boston rounded out the top 3 with 32% satisfaction rates.
And while it’s unclear whether politics plays a role in dating life, 9 out of the 10 cities ranked for the best dating life had Democratic mayors with the lone exception for Provo, whose Mayor Michelle Kaufusi is a Republican.
But how did some of the larger cities do? The nation’s capital came in at number 20 on the list while New York and Los Angeles came in at 50 and 51, respectively.
