Danish wind turbine maker Vestas has secured an 810MW order for the Empire Wind 1 project - its inaugural venture into the US offshore wind market.
The company will supply and commission 54 V236-15.0MW turbines.
Vestas North America president Laura Beane stated: “We are privileged to partner with Equinor on this momentous US project and provide them with our flagship offshore technology.
“Reaching this major milestone is a testament to the vigorous dedication of our entire team, who continuously strive to advance clean energy solutions and build the long-term future of the US offshore market.”
The agreement, finalised from a conditional deal in March 2024, encompasses not only the hardware provision but also a five-year service agreement to ensure optimised performance.
The V236-15.0MW turbine received its type certification in 2023.
Since its launch, Vestas has secured more than 13GW in firm orders and preferred supplier agreements worldwide.
The Empire Wind 1 project is anticipated to position the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) as a leading offshore wind hub in the US.
SBMT will serve as a critical infrastructure point for the deployment of the V236-15.0MW turbines, facilitating staging, pre-assembly and transportation of components.
Turbine delivery for the Empire Wind 1 project is anticipated to commence in 2026, with the project's completion expected in 2027.
Vestas North America customer project execution vice-president Amy McGinty stated: “We are fully committed to building a sustainable supply chain that’s tailor-made for the US offshore market, and the expansion of SBMT is a game-changer for Empire Wind 1 and beyond.
“As we gear up for action, we’re excited to team up with New York suppliers to build a supply chain, and an industry, that’s built to last.”
In July 2024, Vestas secured a 795MW contract to supply turbines for the OranjeWind offshore wind project, a joint venture of RWE and TotalEnergies.
"Vestas secures 810MW order for Empire Wind 1 offshore project in US" was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
