DEERFIELD, Ill., October 22, 2024--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Walgreens is calling on the public to help in the fight against prescription drug abuse by taking part in National Prescription Drug Takeback Day on Saturday, October 26th, 2024. Twice a year, drug takeback days are reserved for the safe disposal of unwanted, unused, or expired medications. Walgreens has more than 1,550 kiosks across 46 states and Washington, D.C. These kiosks are a convenient way to ensure medications are not accidentally or intentionally misused.

This public service is provided at no cost, year-round, by visiting a Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosk during regular pharmacy hours. Kiosk locations can be found on walgreens.com via the store locator. Use the search filter for ‘medication disposal kiosk’ under the pharmacy section. Walgreens pharmacies that do not have safe medication disposal kiosks offer DisposeRx or other drug disposal options free of charge that are also available year-round upon request at the pharmacy counter.

Collected medications are safely disposed of at incineration facilities that are registered with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Since the inception of its safe medication disposal program in 2016, Walgreens has collected and properly disposed of over 6.0 million pounds of unused prescription medications.
