Investors are getting some mixed reads on the economy. The US Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for August showed openings rose by 329,000 to 8.04 million. That compares to a Bloomberg consensus estimate of 7.69 million. The quits rate was 1.9%, with 3.084 million people quitting a job in the month.
Meanwhile, the September read on ISM Manufacturing PMI was 47.2. It was less than the 47.5 economists were expecting. A print below 50 indicates a contraction in the space.
