How to start your 5-year plan for your career, relationships

Former NFL player and Your Money Playbook author Brandon Copeland joins Wealth! to discuss how you can best navigate financial planning for life's big milestones, from a job pivot to entering a long-term relationship.

For a job pivot, the Athletes.org co-founder stresses the importance of saving as much as possible ahead of the transition. Copeland notes that having a cushion is critical in case of any issues with payments or insurance coverage.

When it comes to relationships, Copeland highlights how finances can be make or break them. He explains that it is crucial for couples to get on the same page financially as soon as possible. In addition, couples should make clear financial goals together and be open about their finances to avoid issues down the line.

"Start with your five-year plan. Where do you want to be five years from now? Individually, but also as a couple, as a relationship? Where do you see your lives tracking together? And then work backwards from that and make sure that your one-year plan, your three-month plan are all laddering up towards that five-year plan, and then get your money organized across accounts," Copeland explains.
