Taylor Swift effect: Why her endorsement will move the needle

Americans are about to be in their voting era. What does that all mean for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump?

On the latest episode of Capitol Gains, Lee Carter, President and Partner of maslansky + partners, joins Yahoo Finance’s Rachelle Akuffo, Washington Correspondent Ben Werschkul, and senior columnist Rick Newman to discuss all things election, including Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris and whether or not that will drive more Americans to the polls this November. Carter believes it could.

“[Taylor Swift’s] an influencer who has real influence,” Carter explains. “She drives people's behavior and I think that is something people need to take seriously.”

Even with Swifties getting mobilized to vote and helping accelerate turnout, Carter says Swift’s base is primarily female and that the election will still likely come down to men. When asked what moves the needle for men, Lee says it will depend on what issues are important to them. “More young men are identifying as conservative and many more young women are identifying as democratic or progressive.”

Over the weekend, former President Donald Trump responded to Swift’s endorsement of Harris by posting on his social media network, Truth Social, saying: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” With Election Day being less than 50 days away, it remains to be seen whether this message will impact voters at all come November.
