Ohio Senator JD Vance (R-Oh.) has joined the Trump campaign as the former president's vice presidential pick. Veda Partners managing partner and director of economic policy Henrietta Treyz joins Asking for a Trend to discuss the outlook of the 2024 election amid chaos in the Democratic Party and a recent assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
Treyz explains that Vance's views have significantly shifted since rising to national prominence, especially when it comes to tariffs.
"I expect to see full-throated endorsements of very aggressive trade policies as a major hallmark here. His position on abortion is potentially a major problem, but one that I think Trump is already saddled with. The senator has historically supported Texas' ban on abortion, although he's migrated away from that in recent weeks, depending on which outlets he's speaking with," she explains.
She believes that Trump is very confident, particularly after the assassination attempt, in his ability to win the election in November. Meanwhile, she says that the Biden campaign is "in a state of suspended animation," as pressure mounts for the president to drop out of the race after his weak debate performance. Treyz notes that Kamala Harris would fare better against Trump in swing states compared to Biden, and that campaign will have to face "very difficult conversations stills with donors, with the DNC campaign officials" in the days ahead.
"I'm at 70% that Biden will not be on the ticket. And I see Kamala as the next most likely candidate," she says, continuing:
"I think that the Democratic Party is being very conscientious of their support and respect and adoration for President Biden, who's passed four massive pieces of legislation in the last four years, including two reconciliation bills and two bipartisan bills in something that we haven't seen in modern history... These are all things that the Democrats are very, very proud of, and they're not going to boot Biden unceremoniously. The reality is his age is a real problem, and he's not able to combat the narrative that Trump is selling. And that is the issue."
