Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump held a presidential debate on Tuesday, addressing various national issues, including the immigration and taxes. One thing that didn't get airtime though was the US deficit problem. To provide insights on this topic, Brookings Institution Senior Fellow in Governance Studies and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne joins Morning Brief.
Dionne notes that the economy became accustomed to higher deficits during the pandemic, emphasizing that these increased deficits were necessary to prevent economic collapse. He stresses that "both parties voted for that" approach. Now, he suggests, the focus has shifted to which party will increase the deficit less moving forward.
"At this point, I don't think people have felt the bite yet of the deficit. And neither party sees any interest in making that the centerpiece of their campaign," Dionne told Yahoo Finance.
