Baker Hughes has secured significant contracts with Petrobras to supply 77km of flexible pipe systems to be deployed across Brazil's pre-salt fields.

The multi-year agreement includes risers and flowlines for hydrocarbon production, and associated gas and water injection services.

The support for equipment storage, maintenance and installation is also included in the contract.

Scheduled to commence delivery in mid-2026, the equipment will be utilised in Petrobras' Búzios, Libra, Berbig?o, Sururu and Sépia fields.

The systems tackle the critical issue of stress-induced corrosion cracking from CO? (SCC-CO?), a prevalent problem in pre-salt fields with high concentrations of the gas.

It often occurs when gas is reinjected into wells to reduce flaring and enhance oil recovery.

Baker Hughes oilfield services and equipment executive vice-president Amerino Gatti stated: “Brazil’s Santos Basin contains incredible potential to help power Latin America into the future. Operating in deep waters with high CO2 concentrations presents unique challenges.

“Baker Hughes’ combination of industry-leading subsea technology and engineering, expertise in offshore operations, and extensive experience in the region will assist Petrobras to unlock and develop this potential, delivering these vital resources safely and efficiently.”

Petrobras has made a commitment to limit CO? emissions in their operations, with CO? storage playing a vital role in producing lower-carbon barrels.

The flexible pipe systems from Baker Hughes are expected to support these environmental efforts.

The systems will be manufactured at Baker Hughes' plant in Niteroi, Brazil, a key supplier of flexible pipe systems for the oil and gas industry, employing hundreds in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Throughout 2024, Baker Hughes has announced several agreements with Petrobras, including additional contracts for 69.1km of flexible pipe systems and associated services in the third quarter.

Baker Hughes has been awarded contracts for integrated well construction services in the Buzios field and integrated solutions for workover and plug and abandonment services across Petrobras' pre-salt and post-salt fields, further solidifying the company's role in Brazil's energy sector.
