Does your homeowners insurance cover flooding?

As the southeastern region of the US grapples with the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Jason Rodriguez, trusted choice agent and principal owner of Prominent Insurance, sits down with Alexandra Canal on Wealth! to go over what homeowners need to know about insurance for their property and cost-saving tips.

Rodriguez notes that standard homeowners insurance typically covers wind and hail damage but doesn’t cover flooding. For those affected by Hurricane Helene without flood coverage, he says, “the next step, if the government doesn't come in [and] FEMA doesn't come in and rectify the homeowners [to] make them whole again, then unfortunately, they have to recover that loss on their own.”

He says that for those living in regions often affected by hurricanes, “you want to fortify your home to get discounts from your insurance carrier. You can also raise your deductibles, which will lower your premiums, and you also want to be able to bundle so you can see if you can save additional discounts with your existing homeowner carrier.”
